In an unprecedented turn of events, the Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that Tropical Storm IALY has rapidly intensified into a tropical cyclone. With mean surface winds exceeding 35 knots (65 km/h), this weather phenomenon is now less than 300km away from the coastal city of Mombasa. This historic event marks a significant moment in the South-West Indian Ocean region, as the intense system is expected to bring adverse weather conditions to the coast.

According to Director David Gikungu, the center of Tropical Cyclone IALY is currently positioned northwest of 5°S/45°E, an area where tropical cyclones are exceptionally rare. As the system progresses, peripheral bands are beginning to affect parts of the East African coast, including Kenya and neighboring countries. The forecast indicates that the western periphery of the cyclone will experience moderate rain, storms, and strong winds. These conditions pose potential risks to coastal areas, necessitating caution and preparedness.

Gikungu emphasizes the importance of taking necessary precautions during this period. Strong southerly winds, ranging from 10-30 knots, are expected over Kenya and Tanzania waters. Along the Kenyan coast, waves measuring 1.5 to 3.6 meters are anticipated, resulting in moderate to rough sea conditions. To ensure safety, small boats and crafts are advised to avoid venturing into deep-sea areas throughout the forecast period.
