PWDs Call for Inclusion and End to Discrimination in Mombasa Ahead of International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Special Needs Alliance hosted a gathering at ACK Mombasa Memorial Cathedral Church today to honor the global commemoration of persons living with disabilities (PWDs). The event, which included prayers, mass, and distribution of food aid, spotlighted the challenges faced by PWDs and emphasized the urgent need for their empowerment, inclusion in governance, and access to essential services.

Peter Mwanangina, chairperson of the Special Needs Alliance, addressed the media during the event, decrying systemic discrimination against PWDs in Mombasa County. Mwanangina highlighted issues including lack of empowerment, limited job opportunities, and inadequate health services. He specifically accused the county government of marginalizing individuals who are not of Indian or Arab descent, calling for immediate action to address these disparities.

“Employment remains a significant challenge for us. We are excluded and left out because of our disabilities and our complexion. This kind of discrimination must stop,” Mwanangina stated.

Reverend Ezekiel Mogere of ACK Mombasa Memorial Cathedral added his voice to the criticism, condemning the misuse of funds allocated for PWDs. According to attendees, money meant for the welfare of PWDs often fails to reach those in need, leaving many to struggle on the streets.

“It is a grave injustice to misuse funds meant for people who need it the most. We are calling on the government to ensure these resources are used for their intended purpose,” Rev. Mogere said.

The church also called for better community inclusion of PWDs and provided food supplies to sustain attendees over the festive season. While acknowledging that the assistance was insufficient, the church pledged to continue supporting PWDs wherever possible.

Dora Mwambembe, Assistant Missioner, urged the community to embrace PWDs as equals deserving of love, dignity, and opportunities.

As the world prepares to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities tomorrow, the Special Needs Alliance has planned another celebration at ACK Mombasa Memorial Cathedral. The event will focus on addressing the persistent discrimination PWDs face at both the county and national government levels.

The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities, calling for collective action to create a more inclusive society.

In a landmark move to integrate Islamic and Arabic languages into national vocational training, Sheikh Siraj Rahman College of Islamic Studies held a stakeholder meeting with TVET Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) to chart the development of a curriculum for levels 3 to 6 — covering certificate and diploma programs.
