East African Community Health Professions Harmonization Workshop Concludes Amid Health Challenges

The East African Community (EAC) Workshop on Health Professions Harmonization of Regulation concluded today at the Kenya School of Government, with a closing speech by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Deborah Mulongo. The conference, which brought together health professionals from across East Africa, focused on improving regulatory frameworks for health professions in the region.
In her address to the media, Dr. Mulongo highlighted ongoing challenges in public health facilities, specifically concerning vaccine distribution. She mentioned that the shortage of Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccines is expected to persist for the next two months, but assured the public that children missing vaccinations will be registered for follow-up doses at a later date.
Dr. Mulongo also addressed concerns over a recent virus outbreak in China. While acknowledging global health risks, she reassured the public that Kenya is prepared to respond to any emergency, though no cases have been reported so far in the country.

As tensions rise over the upcoming nurse strike scheduled for Monday, she stated that efforts are being made to address and control the situation before it escalates into full-blown industrial action.

During the workshop, Dr. Jackson Kioko, the Director of Medical Services, raised concerns about the progress of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He called for a stronger commitment from governments in the region to address the challenges and ensure health workers are properly regulated to support UHC goals. Kioko emphasized the importance of a unified approach to the region's healthcare issues.

The workshop concluded with calls for continued collaboration and reform across East Africa to tackle the complex health challenges faced by the region.

In a landmark move to integrate Islamic and Arabic languages into national vocational training, Sheikh Siraj Rahman College of Islamic Studies held a stakeholder meeting with TVET Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) to chart the development of a curriculum for levels 3 to 6 — covering certificate and diploma programs. The meeting, which brought together educators, curriculum developers, and religious leaders, aimed to pave the way for the formal inclusion of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) and Arabic studies into the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system.
