Woman Arrested with 71kg of Bhang Worth Ksh 2.1 Million at Likoni Checkpoint

Ferry Police Station officers arrested a 35-year-old woman, Sandra Valary, and seized 71 kilograms of bhang valued at Ksh 2.1 million at the Likoni checkpoint earlier today. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when police, during a routine search, intercepted a Tuktuk carrying two boxes and backpacks suspected of containing contraband.

According to Likoni Sub-county Police Commander Geoffrey Ruleni, the Tuktuk driver and two other passengers fled the scene during the search, leaving Valary behind. The officers, acting on suspicions raised by the driver’s behavior, inspected the luggage and discovered rolls of cannabis sativa concealed inside the boxes.

Valary, who is now in police custody, claimed she was unaware of the contents of the bags. She told police that a cousin from Migori had called her earlier that morning, requesting assistance in transporting the luggage. She stated that the cousin, who also provided her with some money, had assured her the bags contained bananas and sugarcane, which were indeed part of the consignment.

The Likoni Sub-county Police Commander confirmed the discovery of cannabis and stated that further investigations are underway to identify the individuals behind the illegal operation. He also warned against the use of ferries and other public transport to traffic illicit substances, emphasizing that all perpetrators would face the full force of the law. Vallary will who is the maint suspect will be arraigned in court to answer for the charges.

The Tuktuk involved in the incident has been impounded, and a manhunt is ongoing for the two suspects who fled. Commander Ruleni called on the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the culprits although they have their contacts and photos.
