MV Viking Sky Docks at Mombasa Port on Maiden Visit

The Port of Mombasa on Wednesday welcomed MV Viking Sky from Seychelles on its maiden voyage to Kenya. The vessel, measuring 228.2 meters in length, arrived early in the morning, marking it as the sixth cruiser of the season to dock at Mombasa since September 2024.  

The cruise ship, carrying 845 passengers and 469 crew members — including 19 Kenyans — is set to spend three days at the port. During this period, tourists will have the opportunity to explore various attraction sites in and around Mombasa.  

Addressing members of the press at the port, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, assured visitors of their safety, both within and beyond Mombasa.  

"We have put robust security measures in place to ensure the safety of tourists while they explore our beautiful sites," said CS Miano. She further lauded the cooperation between the national government and the Mombasa County government, terming it vital for tourism growth.  

The arrival of MV Viking Sky is a boost to the tourism sector, with the government targeting over three million visitors this year. CS Miano expressed optimism about the sector’s contribution to the country's economic growth.  

"The tourism sector is a key pillar in boosting the Kenyan economy. With our target of three million visitors, we expect a significant positive impact on local businesses and livelihoods," she stated.  

Addressing concerns about health risks, particularly yellow fever, CS Miano reassured tourists that necessary precautions have been put in place.  

"We have implemented adequate measures to curb health threats, including yellow fever, to safeguard both our visitors and citizens," she affirmed.  

The Port of Mombasa has already received four cruise ships this year, carrying thousands of international tourists. Local stakeholders remain hopeful that the ongoing cruise season will continue to draw more visitors and enhance Kenya’s tourism profile.
