Police Leadership Calls for Community Cooperation to Enhance Security in Mombasa

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja has called for enhanced cooperation between the public and the police to foster peace and harmony in the community. Speaking during the launch of Modern Police station in Mombasa, the IG emphasized the importance of improving the welfare of police officers, expressing hope that the Ministry of Housing would prioritize building houses for officers. He noted that police officers are members of the community and should be treated with respect and dignity.

Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat echoed the IG's sentiments, stressing the need for collaboration between law enforcement and the public. "We will cooperate, and we urge the community to support the authorities by working together," he said.  

Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno outlined measures taken to curb insecurity in the area, stating that the coastal region, including Tana River and Lamu, has been divided into clusters to enhance surveillance and response.

Mvita Member of Parliament (MP) Mohamed Machele also addressed the gathering, calling for accountability and transparency within the police force. He urged officers to desist from demanding bribes from struggling Kenyans in exchange for services. Machele further advocated for the provision of police vans to boost security in Mvita and the greater Mombasa area.  

"I do not support crime and can never be associated with criminals. Parents should also take responsibility for prioritizing security in their households," said Machele. He revealed that he had used National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) resources to construct the Mbaraki Police Station to help tackle insecurity in the area.

Coast Region Police Commander assured the IG and the public that efforts are underway to apprehend criminal gangs in Mombasa, particularly those using machetes to rob and intimidate residents. He reiterated the importance of community involvement in combating crime, noting that public cooperation would be instrumental in bringing perpetrators to justice.  

The police leadership emphasized that security is a shared responsibility, calling on residents to actively participate in initiatives aimed at keeping the community safe.

In a landmark move to integrate Islamic and Arabic languages into national vocational training, Sheikh Siraj Rahman College of Islamic Studies held a stakeholder meeting with TVET Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) to chart the development of a curriculum for levels 3 to 6 — covering certificate and diploma programs.
