Governor Nassir Orders Probe into Mysterious Deaths at Coast General Hospital, Cracks Down on Unsafe Buildings

Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir has launched a comprehensive investigation into the sudden deaths of patients at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, following allegations of mechanical failure that may have cost lives.

Speaking during a press briefing in Mombasa, Governor Nassir confirmed that three families had come forward with complaints after losing their loved ones who were receiving treatment at the facility. The patients were reportedly on life support and relying on oxygen machines, which allegedly shut down unexpectedly, leaving them without critical support.

“We have already initiated dialogue with the affected families and agreed to conduct a post-mortem to determine the actual cause of death,” said Nassir. “We are also conducting a thorough investigation of the hospital's equipment and electrical systems to establish whether there was any truth to the claims.”

The governor emphasized that accountability would be enforced should negligence be confirmed.

“If we find that these deaths were a result of laxity or negligence by the hospital’s management, we will not hesitate to take legal action against those responsible,” he warned.

The revelations have sparked widespread concern among residents over the reliability of public health infrastructure in the region.

In a separate matter, Governor Nassir also addressed concerns about the structural integrity of buildings in Mombasa County. This follows the collapse of a building under construction in Tononoka. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the collapse occurred after workers had vacated the site.

“We are currently demolishing all structures that do not meet the required construction standards,” the governor stated. “Working closely with the Engineers Board of Kenya, we are reviewing the procedures used in putting up buildings in the city to ensure public safety.”

He reaffirmed the county’s commitment to safeguarding residents by cracking down on illegal constructions and enhancing oversight in the building sector.

The dual announcements underscore Governor Nassir’s firm stance on safety and accountability, both in the health and construction sectors of Mombasa County.
