Leaning Nine-Storey Building Demolished in Mombasa Amid Safety Concerns

A nine-storey building that had become a looming threat to public safety in Mombasa’s Central Business District was successfully demolished on Wednesday in a joint operation by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the Mombasa County Government. The building, located on Plot No. XLVI/195/MI, had drawn widespread concern after it was observed to be leaning dangerously, raising fears of an imminent collapse.

The controlled demolition, which unfolded in the heart of the city, brought business to a temporary standstill. Several nearby buildings were affected, with reports indicating broken windows and minor structural vibrations. The operation was closely coordinated to prevent collateral damage and ensure public safety.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir addressed the media shortly after the demolition, saying the County Government had taken a firm stand to avert disaster. “We are taking decisive action. I have appointed a fully independent Multi-Agency Taskforce chaired by Arch. Laurence Gitau of the National Building Inspectorate to investigate the development and construction supervision of the unsafe building,” the governor said.

He assured the public of transparency, noting that the task force’s report will be made public and handed over to relevant authorities for legal action against those found culpable. “The people of Mombasa expect a balanced, professional, and no-holds-barred report,” he stated.

In response to possible administrative lapses, county building inspectors who were in charge of supervising the construction of the ill-fated building have been sent on compulsory leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tragedy, however, marred the demolition efforts. CCTV footage reportedly captured a man attempting to access the building shortly before it came down. The individual is feared to have been trapped inside. Governor Nassir confirmed that he has spoken with the victim’s family and assured them that investigations are ongoing to establish what transpired.

"We owe it to the people of Mombasa to get to the bottom of this — and we will," said the governor, affirming his administration’s commitment to public safety and accountability.

The incident has reignited national debate around building safety standards, construction oversight, and the growing challenge of unregulated developments in urban centers.
