Governor Natembeya Freed on Bail, Barred from Office as Investigations Continue

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has been released on bond following his arrest on Monday by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over corruption allegations.
Magistrate Charles Ondieki, sitting at the Anti-Corruption Court in Milimani, granted the governor a bond of Sh1 million with an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000. As part of the bail conditions, Natembeya has been barred from accessing his county offices to allow for smooth investigations. The prosecution had raised concerns that the governor might interfere with witnesses and tamper with exhibits crucial to the case.

Details of the specific charges against the governor are yet to be disclosed publicly, though they are said to be related to alleged corruption during his tenure in office.

News of Natembeya's arrest sparked swift reactions across Trans Nzoia County. Residents were left stunned, with some taking to the streets in Kitale and other parts of the county to demand transparency and clarity over the charges. Others expressed support for the governor, calling for his release .

Governor Natembeya spent the better part of the day in court before he was finally freed late in the afternoon, ending a long and tense day for both his supporters and the county leadership.

The case will continue as EACC deepens its investigations into the matter.
