Ruto Celebrates Milestone in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Promises Thousands More Homes in Affordable Housing Drive

President William Ruto on Tuesday marked a significant milestone in his administration’s Affordable Housing Programme by officially handing over 1,080 newly built housing units to residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Nairobi. The President, visibly jubilant, hailed the occasion as a personal and political triumph.

Describing the event as one of the most consequential moments of his career, President Ruto said the handover represents not only a roof over people’s heads but a restoration of dignity to vulnerable Kenyans.

"Today, I am happier than you because my dream has come true. We are turning desolation into decent living," he declared, as he led the excited crowd in praise songs and prayers.

The President used the occasion to address his critics who have questioned the viability of the Affordable Housing initiative.

"They told me it's not possible. They called me a liar. But today, we are here, and this is real. Is it a lie or is it the truth?" he posed to the crowd, which responded with cheers.

The Mukuru Kwa Njenga housing project is just the beginning, according to Ruto. He announced plans to deliver an additional 10,000 units by early next year, with 5,000 set for completion by September and another 5,000 in the new year. The goal is to eventually deliver 13,000 units in the area.

Beyond shelter, the President emphasized the economic transformation expected to emerge from the project. With over Ksh.11 billion already pumped into construction and neighborhood development—and a broader economic infusion estimated at Ksh.28 billion—Ruto said the ripple effects will be felt across the local economy.

"We're not just building homes; we're creating hubs of economic opportunity. We envision daycares, schools, gyms, clinics, salons, studios, and even digital start-ups flourishing here," he said.

The site’s infrastructure supports this vision, featuring over 3 kilometers of new roads, 9 kilometers of walkways, nearly 4 kilometers of sewer lines, and dedicated spaces for parking, water storage, waste management, and fire safety. Community amenities include a health center, daycare facilities, a strip mall, and a fire station.

Ruto also renewed his call for Kenyans to enroll on the Boma Yangu portal, his administration’s housing registration platform, saying it ensures equal opportunity for every citizen to own a decent home.
