IEBC Announces By-Election Gazette Notice, Saying they have received 4 recalls, Urges Trust in Electoral Process

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman, Erustus Ethekon, has announced that a gazette notice for by-elections in 23 various constituencies will be issued next month, August 2025. Speaking to the media in Mombasa, Ethekon confirmed that the commission has secured a full budget to conduct the by-elections, ensuring a smooth and transparent process.

The by election that is expected to be conducted in different areas including Senate in Baringo, six Members of parliament and 16 Members of county assembly. 

Accompanied by seven commissioners, Ethekon called on politicians to refrain from using defamatory language or remarks that could erode public confidence in the electoral body. This statement comes amid concerns over recent threats by some politicians claiming they would manipulate the 2027 presidential elections. The IEBC chair urged Kenyans to maintain faith in the commission, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the Constitution of Kenya in all electoral processes.

In preparation for the elections, the IEBC plans to roll out a comprehensive voter education program to address challenges observed in previous elections. Ethekon highlighted that many issues during past polls stemmed from voter-related errors which resulted to spoilt votes, the commission aims to mitigate through increased awareness.
He added that the commission has received 4 cases of constitutes recalling their members of parliament. " We have 4 cases, and we're currently looking on to the Matter closely, however the most important business at the moment is the by election." 

The IEBC also underscored the pivotal role technology will play in ensuring fair and credible elections. “Technology will be at the core of our operations to enhance transparency and efficiency,” Ethekon noted, signaling the commission’s focus on modernizing electoral systems.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some citizens expressing optimism about the IEBC’s efforts to strengthen electoral integrity, while others remain cautious, citing past electoral disputes. 

On the matter of the famous Cherera 4, Ethekon assured kenyans that the team is united and will be looking forward to working together and making decisions that will not spark tension as the one experienced in the 2022 election results announcement.

The commission has appealed for public patience and cooperation as it works to deliver free and fair by-elections soon and the coming 2027 general election.

For further updates, the IEBC has promised to provide detailed timelines and guidelines through the upcoming gazette notice.
