Mombasa Bolsters Road Safety with Donation of Traffic Management Equipment

Road safety in Mombasa County is set to improve significantly following the donation of critical traffic management equipment by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP). The donation, handed over during a ceremony at the County Inspectorate offices, includes 300 reflective vests, 130 traffic cones, 30 warning lights, and eight laptops equipped with speed radar software.

The equipment is expected to enhance the capabilities of the Mombasa County Inspectorate and traffic police in enforcing traffic regulations and reducing road crashes. Marcin Flieger, GRSP’s Program Manager for Road Policing Capacity Building, emphasized the importance of the donation in supporting data-driven policing. “The laptops will aid in collecting data from speed guns donated to the county in May, while the cones, vests, and warning lights will help secure safety checkpoints, with a focus on curbing speeding—a leading cause of road fatalities,” Flieger said.
Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Transport, Infrastructure, and Governance, Daniel Manyala, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting its potential to save lives. “This equipment will enhance traffic management and go a long way in making our roads safer,” Manyala said, urging road users to comply with traffic regulations.

The donation builds on ongoing efforts to improve road safety in Mombasa, with Coast Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer George Kashmiri reporting tangible results. “We’ve already seen a reduction in road crashes, with some weeks passing without a single incident. This additional equipment will further strengthen our efforts,” Kashmiri said.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the County Government of Mombasa, the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), and GRSP. Charles Changawa, Mombasa County Deputy Director of Inspectorate, highlighted the partnership’s impact. “Our collaboration with the National Police strengthens our capacity to manage traffic effectively and serve Mombasa residents efficiently,” he said.

The donation marks a significant step toward safer roads in Mombasa, aligning with broader efforts to reduce road fatalities through enhanced enforcement, training, and community awareness.
