Mombasa Gears Up for Global Trade Spotlight at ITLS 2025

Mombasa is set to take center stage in the global logistics arena as it hosts the inaugural International Trade and Logistics Summit (ITLS) 2025 on October 27–28 at the scenic Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort. This landmark event, a collaborative effort by the Mombasa County Government, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), aims to position Mombasa as a magnet for international logistics investments and a catalyst for economic growth.

The summit is poised to be a game-changer, fostering blockbuster business deals, forging cross-border partnerships, and driving innovation in the logistics and maritime sectors. Organizers are betting big on the event to shape government policies, accelerate digital transformation, and build robust networks for logistics professionals across the globe.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, a key figure behind the initiative, highlighted Mombasa’s pivotal role in regional trade. “Our economy thrives on the pulse of logistics by land and sea. ITLS 2025 will not only showcase Mombasa’s potential but cement its status as a global investment hub,” he said. The governor outlined ambitious goals for the summit, including linking local businesses to international markets, securing trade agreements, and spotlighting cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and digital logistics tools. Green logistics and sustainable port practices will also take center stage, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly growth.

For the first time, KIFWA is joining forces with government and private sector players on this scale, marking a bold step forward for Kenya’s logistics landscape. Speaking at a media briefing at the governor’s office, KIFWA chair Rajab Hamisi called the summit a golden opportunity for logistics professionals and small businesses alike. “This is a chance to network, scale up, and tap into global markets. We’re focused on inclusive growth, especially for SMEs and young entrepreneurs,” Hamisi said. He emphasized youth engagement, with dedicated platforms to showcase innovations and connect traders with buyers, tackling unemployment head-on. “We’re calling on the youth to show up, learn, and innovate let’s solve our region’s challenges together,” he urged.

To sweeten the deal for businesses, Mombasa County is exploring a review of Single Business Permit rates to create a more investor friendly environment. The summit’s regional pull is already evident, with confirmed delegations from Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and Sudan, and Rwanda and Burundi expected to join. Global players from North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia will also attend, bringing futuristic solutions like drone logistics to the table.

KNCCI chairperson and ITLS co-chair Abud Jamal framed the summit as a launchpad for Kenya’s trade ambitions. “This isn’t just about logistics it’s about shaping the future of trade in the region,” he said. “We’re bringing together industry titans, policymakers, and tech innovators to redefine how we do business.” Jamal described ITLS as a transformative platform, offering everything from expert panels and tech exhibitions to business matchmaking and high-level networking.

With plans to make ITLS an annual event, Mombasa is laying the groundwork to become East Africa’s logistics powerhouse.
