Mombasa is set to take center stage as it hosts the United Nations World Tourism Week from September 25 to 28, 2025, an event poised to spotlight the region’s vibrant culture, commitment to sustainability, and growing tourism sector. Under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the week long celebration will emphasize balancing economic growth, social inclusivity, and environmental responsibility, drawing global attention to Kenya’s coastal gem.
Sammy Ikwae, Chairman of the Mombasa Tourism Association, addressed the media in Mombasa, urging residents across the coast to turn out in large numbers to support the event. “This is an opportunity for us to showcase our unique coastal heritage and hospitality to the world,” Ikwae said. He revealed that 32 drivers are undergoing specialized training to ensure they provide exceptional service to tourists, including guidance on handling visitors with professionalism. For safety and efficiency, designated routes have been marked for the event. “We invite everyone across the country to join us for an extraordinary experience filled with coastal cultural activities,” he added.
Mohammed Osman, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Tourism, highlighted the positive trajectory of Mombasa’s tourism sector. “The state of tourism in the county has risen significantly, especially since we empowered stakeholders to play a pivotal role in shaping the industry,” Osman said. He emphasized that the collaborative approach has revitalized the sector, making Mombasa an ideal host for such a prestigious global event.
The festivities will kick off with a vibrant welcome at Moi International Airport and the SGR Terminus, where visitors will be greeted with traditional coastal music and dance, setting the tone for an immersive cultural experience. Each evening, attendees can enjoy discounted performances of the comedy show *AIR 001* at the Little Theatre Club, offering a lighthearted glimpse into local humor.
A highlight of the week is the return of the *Fish Mish Festival* at Mama Ngina Waterfront from September 26 to 28.
